STEP UP Intern Ava Reflects on First Week at Jazz88

Ava

Hi I’m Ava, I’m an intern here at the Jazz88 Radio Station. I’m a rising junior, and I’m so grateful to tell you about my experience here. I’ve had a good time getting to know everyone here and seeing behind the scenes of being on the radio. While working here I’ve noticed that everyone has a crucial role that contributes in some way. Even though I’m still new here, they have not hesitated to make me feel welcome, including me.

On my first day I got to shadow Daniel Sigelman, at first glance it looked like there was so much happening at once. And there was, but I gotta see him multitask and get through it quickly and efficiently. Coming as an intern seeing him work made me have so much respect for him, and I could tell he’s great at what he does. Also I’ve learned how flexible you need to be when a problem comes up, and also don’t overthink or dwell on your mistakes.

My time here so far has given me a new perspective on things. As someone who only occasionally listens to the radio, I never knew how much attention to detail and work went into it. Here at the radio station they really value their listeners and acknowledge their love for jazz. Even seeing a glance of them promoting “Taste of Minnesota,” and how to peak people’s interests is another good way to understand how they are a good business.

Another way that Jazz88 has stood out to me is the way they give students and younger people ways for them to be heard by the public. They have mentioned Chump Chat to me, which is a way for interns like me to talk about things that interest me. Also gave me the opportunity of making my own podcast to show more people my passions. Another thing I really appreciate the people here at Jazz88 is helping me get comfortable speaking on air, and making sure I wasn’t confused about anything. As someone who doesn’t publicly speak and is pretty shy, they had great ways of helping me step outside of my box. Before I knew it I was already soundtracking on my second day here. I’ve been making my own routine to get me prepared every time I have to speak. So far I’ve had a great time here, and can’t wait to learn even more during my time here.

A Little about Me:

I finished my sophomore year at Hopkins High School, which means I only have two more years before I graduate and figure out what I want to do. I’m a student athlete, I play volleyball and I run track. Once I graduate from high school I plan on going to an HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities.) In track and field I’ve been doing hurdles since freshman year. I’ve been playing volleyball for four years and I consider it to be one of my biggest passions, and I’m considering playing on the collegiate level once I’m in college. Math has always been my favorite subject in school. During my internship this summer I hope to know more about what interests me, and what I want to do in the future.
